The Community Kitchen, Brighton
When the need for a community cooking space coincided with MacConvilles celebrating 80 years in business, it led to a charitable collaboration that benefitted local residents and inspired others to give back too. Bringing together a design team, contractor and consultants, MacConvilles rallied local businesses to give their services and resources for free to create a space for community cooking and healthy eating education.

Acting as Quantity Surveyors and Project Managers, we lent our support free of charge to the Brighton & Hove Food Partnership Trust (FPT), creating a permanent space from which the Trust can teach people to cook, eat a healthy diet, grow their own produce and waste less food. A genuine community space wouldn’t truly serve its purpose unless the local community had their say in its design and function – which is why in creating the Community Kitchen, we ensured stakeholders were involved at every step. With a challenging budget, we utilised our experience to create a space that maximises the opportunities of the existing structure and incorporates material fit to withstand the robust use of a community space, whilst also creating an inviting environment where people can connect and learn to cook together; earning the space a RICS Community Benefit Award (2019).
“MacConvilles project managed the conversion of an office in Community Base into an amazing Community Kitchen for the Food Partnership in early 2018. Throughout the build they were totally reliable, acting as an interface between us and the building contractor and helping us to make informed choices when the inevitable issues arose. Thank you (in particular to Ben) for helping make our dream of a cookery school for the whole community a reality.”
