New YHA in Brighton City Centre

Brighton City Centre is to have a new youth hostel in mid-November when the YHA (Youth Hostel Association) open their doors in the former Grade II listed Royal York Hotel.

As CDM Coordinators MacConvilles’ worked closely with Just H, the Manchester based Architects and local Contractors, A & F Pilbeam Construction, to ensure the project was completed with health and safety a priority.

The Royal York was constructed as a house in 1771 and has undergone many changes, becoming a hotel in 1819 and hosting many distinguished guests including the Duke & Duchess of Clarence in 1829 and Benjamin Disraeli in 1840.  The property proudly displays a Blue Plaque recording William IV and Queen Adelaide stayed there in 1829.

During the 19th Century the Royal York was purchased by the local Council and was converted into offices in 1930.

In 2006 the building again became a hotel and was luxuriously furnished in a style appropriate to a Grade II listed property – what a treat for today’s Youth Hostellers!
